Port Stephens

Port Stephens is affectionately known as the Blue Water Wonderland.  When holidaying here you can do as little as or as much as you want.  Relax on one of our 26 sandy beaches and you will probably catch a glimpse of a few of our resident 150 bottlenose dolphins.

If lying on the beach isn’t enough, you can walk up Tomaree Headland and take in the breathtaking views, kayak around our waterways, try parasailing, jet skiing, sailing or deep-sea fishing. In Winter, you will find plenty of opportunities for whale watching… You won’t be bored.

The Worimi Conversation Lands near Anna Bay are great for quad biking, horse riding or you can even ride a camel.

Nelson Bay

Nelson Bay is the main suburb in Port Stephens. There is a vast array of dining and recreational options. It is the home of some lovely bay beaches that are perfect for small children including Nelson Bay Beach, Dutchies Beach and Little Beach. For snorkelling, you can’t go past Fly Point - an aquatic reserve with magnificent marine life. Nelson Bay houses one of Port Stephens largest supermarkets with Woolworths on Donald Street, right in the heart of town and there are a variety of restaurants and cafes to choose from. Numerous boutiques can be found on Stockton Street, Magnus Street and Donald Street or simply wander down to D’Albora Marina, the launch spot for numerous water sports.

Shoal Bay

Shoal Bay is one of the most popular suburbs in Port Stephens with its beautiful 2.5km long each. View historic World War II Gun Placements on the climb to the summit of Tomaree Headland… the view is worth waiting for! Restaurants, cafes and speciality shops make this a wonderful place to spend a day, or a week! Venture of the normal track and explore the natural beauty of Zenith, Box and Wreck Beaches.

Fingal Bay

With a patrolled sandy beach, Fingal Bay allows you to escape the crowds from the centre of town. Fingal Beach has its own island connected by a sand-spit and is well protected from the winds. The spit at the north end links Fingal Island to the mainland and its' key feature is an imposing lighthouse. This area is probably most famous for the 2006 Tourism Australia advertising campaign featuring Lara Bingle and the iconic line "So where the bloody hell are ya?"

Anna Bay

The village of Anna Bay provides everything you could need. Close to a number of beaches including Birubi, Boat Harbour and One Mile there are shopping facilities at the local IGA, chemists, restaurants and cafes. Located only 10 minutes from the centre of Nelson Bay the Worimi Conservation Lands (Birubi Beach / Stockton Beach) form the largest sand dune system in Australia, covering an area of 4,200 hectares. The area is well known for the 32 km long beach and mobile sand dunes which climb up to 40 m high. Get your heart racing with a thrilling ride on the back of a quad bike as part of a guided quad biking tour. Explore the dunes at your own pace by purchasing a beach vehicle permit and steering your way through the desert in a 4WD or sandboarding across the dunes is also a fantastic way to get acquainted with this magnificent area.

Boat Harbour

Boat Harbour and Fishermans Bay sit on the whale corridor. Each year there are daily opportunities to see these spectacular beasts on their trip north. The ocean beaches in this area provide a more wild and dramatic experience that the sheltered areas of the Bay. Enjoy a picnic at Boat Harbour Beach or visit Kingsley Beach for a swim.

Tanilba Bay

Tanilba Bay is a suburb of Port Stephens located on the Tilligerry Peninsula; adjacent to the bay from which it got is name. "Tanilba" is said to mean "place of the white flowers" in a local Indigenous language. The main beach in Tanilba Bay is located on the southern side of Port Stephens and runs from east to west. The eastern part of the beach accessed along a board walk with steps down to small inlets that provide access to the beach under the protection of native trees that are known for their koala population. The centre and western parts of the beach are flanked by various picnic areas and parks and boat ramps with the westernmost end having a wide stretch of sandy beach. At very low tide the sandy flats are exposed and on occasions during the high tide the water covers all the sand. The bay is protected from southerly winds which makes it a popular place for water sports such as water skiing. There are multiple water ways to enjoy around the area. A Coles Supermarket, Bottle Shop, Butcher and Bakery can be found at the Tanilba Bay Shopping Centre. There is a club in Tanilba Bay and Lemon Tree Passage for dinner and a fantastic restaurant on the Lemon Tree Passage waterfront, called The Poyers with a renowned French Chef.

Lemon Tree Passage

Lemon Tree Passage is a leafy, tranquil and attractive retirement centre only subdivided in 1962 (there were just 30 residents in 1931). There are several theories concerning the origins of the town’s name. It is said that lemon trees were mysteriously found growing on the point by early settlers (possibly washed ashore from other settlements). Another is that they were in fact a native plant called cheesebush which is similar in appearance. A third concerns a lemon tree orchard grown by a resident. A particularly enjoyable thing to do in Lemon Tree Passage is inspect the native flora reserve in Helen Ave, the diversity of Australian plantlife is spectacular. Another two walks – the Mangrove Board Walk and the Lilli Pilli Walk – are located at the tip of the peninsula in Koala Park. Guarding the point nudged by Tilligerry Creek as it spills into Port Stephens, Lemon Tree Passage looks out across a narrow passage to Bulls Island. The township offers a variety of gentle, coastal walking trails and a central boat ramp provides direct access to the port’s mainstream.

Salamander Bay

Salamander Bay is named after the adjacent shallow bay, itself named after Salamander, a convict ship from the Third Fleet, which was the first European vessel to enter Port Stephens (1791). Salamander Bay features a number of small "bay" beaches which are great for small children with many parks with Council maintained BBQ facilities. The main shopping centre on the Tomaree Peninsula is located in Salamander Bay with a Coles, Woolworths and Aldi Supermarket, K-Mart, Best n Less and multiple specialty stores. There are also a number of fast food and dining options.

Soldiers Point

Located on the southern shores of Port Stephens, Soldiers Point it is almost entirely surrounded by the port and is a popular location for fishing and boating. While primarily residential, like other suburbs around Port Stephens, it is a popular tourist destination, especially in summer months, however it does to be quieter than the main tourist areas of Nelson Bay and Shoal Bay. Soldiers Point was originally the site of a garrison of soldiers that was established in 1820 to hunt down escaped convicts. In July 2016, the New South Wales government declared 5.9 ha (14.6 acres) of the suburb as an Aboriginal place, recognising that Soldiers Point was a special place for cultural, spiritual and historic reasons to the Worimi people. At the Soldiers Point Marina you will find two great restaurants; The Deck and The Wharf or we can definitely recommend taking a cheese platter and a wine to Sunset Beach to watch the sun go down.

Corlette

Corlette is located on the southern shores of Port Stephens with approximately 75% of the suburb's 4.3 km of coastline being occupied by three beaches. Its western border forms the shoreline of Salamander Bay, after which the adjoining suburb of Salamander Bay is named. On its northern shoreline are two beaches. The largest of these, Bagnalls Beach is the local "off leash" dog friendly beach. Corlette is in-between Nelson Bay and Salamander Bay.

Fishermans Bay

Fishermans Bay is a small suburb of Port Stephens that is on the same side of the Peninsula as Anna Bay and Boat Harbour with an ocean beach and surrounded by Tomaree National Park. It is secluded and quiet and away from the hustle and bustle of the main tourist areas of Port Stephens.
